This review will focus on the key insights from the book Discerning The Voice Of God. My hope is that everyone takes time to immerse yourselves in this book and gain understanding. In part one, I will discuss the first four chapters because they lay the foundation for discerning God's voice. In part one, Priscilla lays the foundation for how you can align with God and be positioned to hear His voice. In chapter 1, she shows, through a conversation with her friend, how many of us approach prayer life and wonder why we still can’t hear God's voice. We see her engage in what I like to call “word vomiting.” By the end of lunch, she noticed she hadn’t given her friend a chance to respond; this experience immediately took me back to my own prayer life, where I, too, get caught up in thoughts of fear and uncertainty.

“If we want to be able to sense his direction, we must slow down, quiet our hearts, and listen for the way his spirit communicates” (page 18).

Priscilla states that the only way you can hear God is by choosing to be quiet and patient. God wants to communicate with you, but he can’t if you use your prayer time to talk excessively. Priscilla believes structuring your prayer time should be broken into three parts:

Worship: Priscilla states it’s important to start your prayer time with worship. Spend this time acknowledging the great I am.

Prayerful Listening: Praying with mind and heart. Praying with your mind means taking moments in your prayer time to share your list of requests, concerns, and comments with God. Afterward, pray with your heart. Resist the urge to quickly get up after sharing your prayer request. Invite God to share and download knowledge; only he knows who wants to share with you.

Meditation: You may notice that he shares a scripture with you. Use that scripture and meditate on the word; see how it applies to your day-to-day life and current circumstances.

Ideally, this structure will put you in a position to better hear the voice of God. However, it may not be doable in your current season. Here are a few hindrances that affect your ability to engage in a restructuring of your prayer time:

  • You are finding it difficult to follow through on God's instructions ( Obedience is required)

  • Lacking consistency in reading the Word of God

  • You believe that there is not enough time in your day

  • You treat prayer time and bible reading as a task to check off on your daily checklist

  • Unwilling to become disciplined and form a routine

  • You find yourself easily distracted by social media and other things

Priscilla gave a wonderful suggestion for incorporating the Word of God into our everyday life, and I want to encourage not only myself to do it, but you as well. In this week's challenge: If you find it difficult to take time out of your busy schedule, as Priscilla mentioned, one way you can incorporate the Word of God into your day-to-day is to find a scripture of the week and write it on note cards. Place each note card in a place where you tend to visit frequently throughout your day, such as in the car, on your refrigerator door, or on the mirror in your bathroom, and meditate on that particular scripture for the week.
