Part Two: Recognizing the Sound of His Voice
I really enjoyed Part Two; it included many details about how God conveys different messages, assignments, and instructions. These chapters really spoke to me and my current situation. I’m in a season of life where I'm being challenged to step outside my comfort zone. Priscilla does a wonderful job conveying how God communicates through her own examples, which resonated with me and helped me connect them to my current experiences. These chapters made me stop and think about the challenges I’m currently facing, and they helped me become more aware of what God is trying to communicate in my life.
Key Insights of Recognizing the Voice of God
God is Persistent and Personal: Priscilla discussed how God tends to communicate. One thing that resonates with me in this chapter 4 and 5 is how Priscilla states that when God wants to communicate something to you, it won’t be a one-time thing; you’ll see the same message conveyed in different ways. You may notice recurring themes through conversations with others, scriptures, and dreams. There have been countless times when my circumstances changed, or situations occurred unexpectedly, and I didn't try to understand why they were happening to me. I found myself quickly moving on or trying to resolve and change my circumstances. However, Priscilla states that the circumstances we find ourselves in throughout our lives are part of God’s will, and it’s important to pause, consider why you’re experiencing these circumstances, and lean on God for understanding and guidance before taking any action.
God Brings Peace: Have you ever felt peace after making a decision? Maybe you had a decision to make, and you brought it to the Lord in prayer, or perhaps you have been seeking guidance on a particular matter, and the Lord spoke to you and led you down a certain path. In this chapter, Priscilla discusses God’s ability to bring peace when we feel surrounded by chaos. Priscilla says God's peace gives you a sense of safety and security and remains a constant presence even when you face challenges, risk, or danger; there’s no fear in sight because the peace soothes and strengthens you. Priscilla strongly states that when you can hear God's voice and respond with obedience, the peace you feel about the decision you make or the path you take will help you recognize whether God is leading and speaking to you. As a result, you won't second-guess your decision or worry about how you will carry out the assignment or task; you'll find contentment with where you are in the moment and where God is leading you next.
He will Challenge You: God will present you with many challenges that will develop your character and skills to carry out God’s will. These challenges are designed to get you to rely not on your own strength but on His.
He Speaks Truth: This Chapter emphasizes the importance of reading the Word of God because God will never communicate instructions or knowledge to you that contradict His word. Furthermore, she breaks down spiritual barriers that can hinder a believer's ability to hear God's voice, such as unforgiveness, doubt, pride, and fear. These barriers are known as Strongholds and are often developed as a result of being mistreated by others.
He speaks with Authority: When you hear God's voice, He speaks with such authority that it stops you physically in your tracks or stops your spiraling thoughts, and as Priscilla describes, "It hits you deep. It grips you. Your heart burns" (p. 145). Through the power of his voice, there is no doubt or confusion about who is speaking.
I hope you all are enjoying this book as much as I am! See you for Part 3 of our first book review!
