Faith Series (part 3): Maintaining Faith When the Enemy Attacks
The enemy takes the opportunity to get you off track when you are most vulnerable. For the past two blogs, we have discussed what Faith is and how to maintain it during times of uncertainty. But what do you do when, in the midst of your trials, the enemy attacks? In this week's blog post, we will dive into the enemy's types of attacks.
For those of you who have recently set yourselves apart. You may have recently felt as if you have gone through the fire; you may have shifted and changed how you respond and react, even shifting your heart posture, or you may currently be in the midst of making these changes but feel as if you can't catch a break. You may be experiencing setbacks or even self-doubt; these are examples of how the enemy attacks. The Bible states, "The thief comes only in order to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have and enjoy life, and have it in abundance [to the full, till it overflows]." ( John 10:10). We see throughout the bible how the enemy uses many devices to affect you directly. The enemy has no power to directly move you away from your assignment, your purpose, the will of God; however, you can place yourself off course through your own actions, behaviors, and heart posture. As you move into your purpose and carry out the will of God, you may have noticed a constant cycle of attacks that has temporarily knocked you off course or made you want to quit the assignment God has called you to complete. Let's take a look at some examples of the attacks:
Mental attacks: Mental attacks are the attacks of the mind. The enemy is known to attack by manipulating the mind. The enemy will attack your ability to maintain focus and concentration on the assignment God has given you through distractions such as social media. We Also, see in Luke 4 that Jesus was tempted by the devil for 40 days in the wilderness; you see that Satan tempts Jesus repeatedly, and Jesus doesn't fall for the mental traps of satan. We see in Luke 4:9-11 how Satan will use Scripture to attempt to manipulate you. We see the enemy use manipulation to affect your self-perception, leading to self-doubt, guilt, and feelings of worthlessness. It's important to observe and dispute these thoughts. Do not allow space for these thoughts to sit within and fester.
Emotional attacks: You may find that some emotional attacks arise when you struggle to control your emotions. Ephesians 4:26-27 states, "In your anger do not sin": Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold. (Ephesians 4:26-27). This Scripture discusses the importance of not holding on to anger and of not lashing out at others when you find yourself angry. In this present moment, you find that you struggle with being quick-tempered, angry, or bitter towards the people around you. You may find it difficult to let go of the anger and bitterness. This may be an emotional attack you face.
Physical attacks: There are various types of physical attacks individuals may endure. For instance, one may experience physical pain that hinders one's ability to carry out God's will. In Job 2:6-7, we see that satan attacks Job's body with painful sores, and Job's faith did not waver despite his circumstances. Second, you may experience exhaustion that keeps you from seeing that you are capable of taking on the assignments God has given you. Fatigue or pain may shift your mindset, leading you to lean into the physical pain or exhaustion you feel and to put off the assignment you've been given. 2 Corinthians 12: 9-10 "But he said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ's sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong." These verses show how God steps in for those experiencing physical pain; we must depend on and have faith in God's power to strengthen us.
Under Attack: How can we maintain Faith in God's Promises?
Through the Armor of God
In Ephesians 6:12, it states, "For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms."Meaning what we are up against is not people; it is spiritual forces. Thus, it is important to know that you cannot rely on your own strength and knowledge. You must put on the full armor of God to stand firmly against the devil's schemes (Ephesians 6:10-31).
Full Armour of God
Belt of Truth: The devil will misuse Scripture, spew lies, and be deceitful. Believers must use God's truth to defeat the enemy's lies. To gain knowledge, seek knowledge from the Holy Spirit, wise counsel, and reading your bible.
Breastplate of Righteousness: This particular armor protects the heart. Satan attacks our sense of self and emotions. When believers wear the breastplate of righteousness, God provides comfort and safety from the devil's attacks.
Shoes with the readiness that comes with the gospel of peace: As I have read about and prayed about this particular armor and its meaning, the term that came to mind is "Boots on the Ground,". This idiom, according to the Cambridge Dictionary, means people who are physically present in a place to achieve something. We are soldiers for the army of the Lord; we must be ready to spread the good news of God's kingdom.
Shield of Faith: When the devil attacks you physically and emotionally through insults and setbacks. Your Faith in God will allow you to see beyond the battle you are currently facing and to see the victory in the end.
Helmet of Salvation: When the devil attacks you with doubts, despair, and worries over your circumstances. Putting on your helmet of salvation allows you to guard your mind from the devil's attacks but also allows you to keep God as your main focus.
Sword of the Spirit: It is the only armor that is an offensive weapon. The Sword of the Spirit is the Word of God. Taking time out of your schedule to meditate on the Word of God, using it in the midst of adversity, and trusting in his word will help you overcome the devil's attacks when he tempts you.
In Luke 4:13, it states, "When the devil had finished all this tempting, he left him until an opportune time." This verse shows that the devil is always looking for an opportunity to attack. He's relentless and trying to ensure that your relationship with God is severed. He wants you to feel unworthy of a relationship with God. It's important to ensure that you are in tune with the word of God, engage in daily prayer, and trust in God's promises to stand firm during attacks and become victorious over the enemy's lies, deception, and manipulation.
