Identity is the collection of values, beliefs, and attitudes that make us who we are. So what does it mean to find our identity in Christ? In this week's blog, we'll discuss the values, beliefs, and attitudes that make up who we are in Christ, and how we can apply these principles in our day-to-day life.
Urgent Call to become Christlike
In the New Testament, we are often encouraged to become Christlike. This means we are called to adopt the same desires, beliefs, and actions that Jesus deemed acceptable and honorable. The biggest question is: who are we in Christ? Let’s look at a few scriptures that point to our identity in Christ.
In Matthew 10: 38-39. Jesus says, "Whoever does not take up their cross and follow me, It’s not worthy of me. Whoever finds their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life, for my sake, will find it. This first stood out to me because Jesus is saying you can't maintain a life in this world by focusing on gaining worldly treasures like power, popularity, money, and material things. Jesus says this will cause you to lose the opportunity to become the individual in Christ God created you to be; therefore, he says it’s important to lose the old life and gain a new life with Christ here on earth and in eternal life.
The second verse, 2 Corinthians 5:17, states Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! In this verse, Paul emphasizes that this transformation provides a new sense of self and a new perspective on life.
As a result, finding our identity in Christ means:
Ephesians 1:5-6: Through Jesus's sacrifice, we are adopted as God's children. One thing that stands out to me in verse 5 is that it says we are "predestined for adoption," meaning that according to God's will, he had already decided that we would become his adopted children through Christ.
Ephesians 1:7: Through the shedding of Jesus's blood, we are given a second chance (redemption), our sins are taken away, and we are forgiven.
Ephesians 1:11: We are under the authority of God, meaning that we were predestined according to the purpose of his will. God has carefully crafted a plan for each of us according to his will. As believers, it is important to let God lead you and direct your steps.
Ephesians 1:13: All believers in Christ share that when we became believers in Christ, we were given the Holy Spirit, who dwells within.
Ephesians 2:10: We are God's handiwork. He has crafted and shaped us to do good works.
Ephesians 3:6: As Believers, we are all equal in Christ, and we all share in the promise of blessings through Christ.
Colossians 2:10: We don't need to search for meaning, purpose, and fulfillment on our own because through Christ we are made complete.
Colossians 2:11: Before finding our identity in Christ, we were often led by our flesh; our actions and thoughts centered around our fleshly desires. But through Christ we are set free from our sinful nature.
II Timothy 2:10: We will have the opportunity, through Christ, to share in eternal glory.
Romans 3:24: Because Jesus died for our sins, God declares us justified and righteous through Christ.
I Corinthians 1:2: We are hand-selected by God, set apart by Christ to fulfill his service (sanctified), and made holy in Jesus Christ.
Identity in Christ: Interacting with Others (Practical Steps to Take)
In Matthew, Jesus speaks about how to navigate the world as a true believer in Christ. Here are a few verses that describe how we should respond and behave in the world as believers.
Matthew 5:21-22: Avoid anger and resolve conflict with your adversary or enemy quickly; Scripture states that we must resolve issues with brothers and sisters before we go to God.
Matthew 5:27-30: Be faithful, and keep our hearts from lusting.
Matthew 5:31-32: Follow through on marriage commitments.
Matthew 5:33-37: Refrain from making commitments to God and having no intention of following through on them.
Matthew 5:38-42: Avoid seeking revenge on those who wronged you.
Matthew 5:43-47: Jesus calls us to love our enemies; instead of retaliating, we overcome evil by praying and loving our enemies.
Matthew 6:1-4: Jesus wants us to be willing to give to the needy, but avoid boasting about what we give; do it in secrecy.
Matthew 6:31-34: Jesus says there’s no need to worry about the things of this world, for when you seek first the kingdom of heaven, all things will be provided.
Matthew 7:1-3: Avoid judging others. Jesus says that the way you judge others, you will be judged the same way.
I encourage you to read the books of the New Testaments for yourself and gain your own understanding of your identity in Christ.
