Faith Series: What does it Mean to have Faith?

Welcome to a 3-part faith blog series in which we will explore what it truly means to have faith. “For we live by faith and not by sight” (2 Corinthians 5:7, NIV). If you have followed my blog journey since the first week of blogs, you may have noticed that each blog has led up to this series of blogs. In past blogs, I’ve discussed how to overcome doubts and fears, as well as the importance of trusting in God and obeying his instructions. Those past discussions are vital to understand and work on in order to increase your faith in God. It’s important to recognize that in the absence of faith, you have fears and doubts leading to a lack of trust in what God has promised you. If you have experienced this uphill battle, you may find that you take matters into your own hands to alleviate the discomfort you feel, which either provides a temporary fix or puts you deeper in a hole, leaving things in a bigger mess than before. In this 3-part series, we will dive into faith and how God will use our circumstances to build our character, bring us into alignment with his will, and bring you into your purpose.

What is Faith?

Faith is unwavering trust in God; regardless of your circumstances, you have immense trust and confidence that God is working on your behalf to rectify the situation. With faith, there is no room for fear or doubt because you are not focusing on what you see in the natural but more so on the instructions, the reassurance, and the promises God has spoken to you. Faith is a foundation piece in your walk with Christ. Hebrews 11:6 (AMP) states that without faith it is impossible to walk with God and please him. Thus, you must believe that God exists.

How is faith developed and maintained?

  • Through Generations: In 2 Timothy 1: 5, Paul writes a letter to Timothy, and one thing that stood out to me was how he noted that Timothy’s “sincere faith” was similar to the faith of his mother Eunice and his grandmother Lois. Here is a direct example of how faith can be passed down through generations. This example confirms the importance of Proverbs 22:6, “Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.” See, through your actions, such as how you demonstrate having faith during difficult times. Your children are observing and learning from you. What you do in these moments will be the same actions your children will adopt and use when they face difficulty.

  • Through communing with God: Taking time to fellowship with the Lord allows you to hear his voice; this is where you receive reassurances and a reiteration of his promises to help you. Matthew 6:33 says, " But first seek his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Consistently seeking God, he will meet all needs. A hard lesson I learned is that I can’t seek God only when there is trouble or difficulty. I must seek the Lord at all times, no matter what season I’m in.

  • Actively Choosing to Trust God:There will be circumstances you face, and God will give you a set of instructions. He is counting on you to follow those instructions without complaining or trying to take control of the situation. This is how your trust in the Lord deepens. Every morning, you have to choose to wake up and consciously trust God, rather than attempt to take control of the situation. Even when it feels as if no changes are being made or you are feeling frustrated in the stillness, take a moment to say, "Lord, I surrender; your way is better than my own." Focus on what God wants you to develop. When we experience trials and tribulations, there is a fruit of the Spirit that needs to be cultivated, such as Patience.

  • Limit Distractions: The enemy wants to ensure that you do not reach your purpose. He wants to distract you so much that you lose sight of your faith in God. Instead of having gratitude for the things you have, you turn your attention to what your neighbor has and compare your life to your neighbor’s life. This type of distraction leads to an increase in doubts, anger, anxiety, and depression, leading you to lose sight of what God is trying to develop within and through you. If this tends to affect you greatly, it may be best to limit social media usage in order to keep your focus on God. Just to put into perspective how distractions can affect your ability to keep your focus on God, we will take a look at Matthew 14:29-31. Starting in Matthew 14:28, Jesus tells them to go ahead of him and cross the Sea of Galilee. While crossing, the disciples begin to experience a storm. In the midst of the storm, Jesus appears and eases their fears by stating, “Take courage,it is I! Do not be afraid”. Peter's response to him is that if it is the Lord, then tell me to come. Jesus replies, “Come.” In that moment, Peter steps out onto the water and walks toward Jesus until he becomes distracted by the wind, which leads him to feel fearful; as a result, Peter begins to sink. This is a moment in which Peter’s faith was tested, and as Peter sinks into the water, Jesus catches him and states, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?”. This passage gives a great understanding of how distractions can throw you off course. It is important to do your best to keep your distractions to a minimum.

Questions to Ponder Until Next Time:

When do you find that your faith is tested?

How do you trust God in moments of uncertainty?
